Our Beliefs

Emanuel Lutheran Church - Teaching Statement

God
We teach that there is one true, holy God, eternally existing in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that God is spirit (John 4:24), indivisible (Deuteronomy 6:4), of infinite power and wisdom (Jeremiah 10:12), and goodness (2 Chronicles 7:3, Matthew 19:17). We believe that God created all things, visible and invisible, and that He continues to sustain and preserve all things in accordance with His own gracious will.

Jesus
We teach that Jesus Christ, the second person of the Trinity, is Lord and Savior of the world. We believe Jesus is the Word (Logos) of God made man, that He was in the beginning with the Father and the Holy Spirit, and that all things were created through Him. (John 1:1-5, 14)

We believe that Jesus, who is fully God and fully man, born of the Virgin Mary, was sent to suffer and die on the cross as a sacrifice for the sin of the world. We believe that He was raised from the dead by the power of God so that we might receive forgiveness of sin and everlasting life with God in Heaven.

We believe that Jesus will return at the end of time in judgment. (John 5:27-30) We believe that just as Jesus was obedient to the will of God the Father, we too, should be imitators of His obedience and life and therefore love and serve as He did (Ephesians 4:11-13; 5:1-2).

Holy Spirit
We teach that the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, is active in the lives of people today (John 14:16-17). We believe that the Holy Spirit is at work calling us, building us into a holy temple (Ephesians 2:22), and teaching us how to live the new life we have been given in Christ (John 16:13-14; Romans 8:13-16, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20). We believe that every Christian ought to desire to be "filled" with the Holy Spirit (John 3:5-8; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 5:18).

Bible
We teach that the Holy Bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God and as such is the definitive authority for all matters of our faith and lives. We believe that the Bible is true and bears witness to the saving grace of God in Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh (John 5:39; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21).

Salvation
We teach that we are saved by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. Salvation is not something that we can earn or attain on our own. This was God's choice, so that we would in all matters learn to be dependent upon Him (John 1:12-13, 3:16; Ephesians 2:8-10).

Church
We teach that Jesus Christ is the head of the church, which is gathered by the Holy Spirit. We believe that the Holy Spirit calls and gathers believers together in order that we may be empowered and equipped to carry out the Great Commission of Christ to go out and preach, teach, baptize, and make disciples of all nations. We believe that the purpose of the church is to bear witness to Jesus Christ (Matthew 5:14-16; Acts 1:8; Ephesians 1:13, 2:22).

Discipleship
We believe and teach that Christian life is lived out in the call of Jesus, "Follow me." Discipleship is a lifelong call to obedience, love, service, study, prayer, worship, fellowship, stewardship, and spiritual growth.
